One is the loneliest number...
Remember this post about Jayden's allowance?
We usually give Jayden his allowance on Sunday's. We also usually head to Walmart after church on Sunday for grocery shopping. And so Jayden usually has spent his "spending money" before 12:00 on Sunday. It drives Todd crazy that he wants to waste his money immediately!
Last Sunday Jayden wanted to buy a big ball from Walmart. Todd (struggling with watching Jayden waste his money) told him no because we already have two smaller balls at home. So Jayden came up with an alternative plan since that was THE ONLY THING in Walmart that cost a dollar: Can we go to the dollar store?
And so we did.
Jayden and I walked the aisles of the dollar store looking for that ONE perfect thing: a spider man watch. I kept reminding him that if he saved his dollar, the next week he would have TWO dollars and maybe then they would have what he really wanted! But since I am certainly not more convincing than a hot-one-dollar-bill in a five year old's hand he picked out a shooter gun. Once again, I tried to convince him that maybe he should wait to find the spider man watch if that was what he really wanted. Clearly I am not very good at being a five year old boy...
There we were, in the check out line when low and behold THERE WERE THE SPIDER MAN WATCHES! So, I'm thinking that it's a done deal; goodbye shooter and hello watch! But instead the dilemma began! Again, I an not very good at being a five year old boy.
Which to buy?
Jayden looked at me with tears welling up in his eyes because he didn't know which one to pick. I empathized with him telling him it's hard to pick when you like more than one thing. Hoping that it would sooth his nerves I told him he should pick the one he likes the most. But then the light bulb went off; "But I have another dollar at home and so we can go, get that, and then I can get both."
Parenting moment: Do I rescue him and just give him a dollar? Do I drive home get his dollar and come back? Or do I make him choose?
I told him no, we wouldn't come back today but we could come back later this week with his money. That WAS NOT what he was hoping for. I asked him if he wanted to let the person behind us go (so that he could keep thinking). And so he did. And then the next person. And the next.
Finally I said he needed to choose. Reluctantly he did...the shooter gun.
Immediately when we got in the truck he told Todd his dilemma. He said he had a funny feeling about that watch. That night the last thing he said to me was he was still having that bad feeling about not getting the watch.
My heart broke.
Wishing I had just given him the dollar but knowing he needs to go through these life lessons.
The next afternoon on the way home from school, without saying a word, Todd turned into the Dollar store parking lot.
J: Where are we going?
T: I have to get a spider man watch at the store.
J: Can I borrow a dollar and get one too?!?
And so we all slept better that night.

Yellow is one step away from Red!
Jayden's class uses the green/yellow/red card system to encourage them how to control their behavior. "Green team" is best. Three yellow cards means no treasure box on Friday. Red Card is time out in the office.
For the most part Jayden stays on Green team. He's gotten a couple of Yellow cards and one Red card for being rough on the playground (after repeatedly being told to stop).
This week one of his yellow cards said:
"While playing a game in circle his team didn't win and he yelled out Damnit Crap".
Enough said!

OUCH!
Face + Mulch = Ouch!

Jayden was playing tag on the playground at school, tripped over a friend, and apparently landed on his face! He was ok and didn't even realize how bad it was until he got in the car and saw himself in the rear view mirror. We've been putting Coca butter (aka bottom butter) on it and it has healed rather fast. No family pictures this week!

Flag Football
I first learned about i9 sports a couple of months ago from one of my co workers. The concept is all about fun and competition is hardly present. The practices and games are played on the same day.
So Jayden started flag football a couple of weeks ago. (He's #4). He practices from 8:30-9:00 and games are from 9:00-10:00 on Saturdays.
He's played two games and lost both, but I don't think Jayden even noticed!
There is a lot of playing with one's mouth piece.
Running in the wrong direction. Not by Jayden...yet.

Lots of volunteered water breaks.

Fixing and re-fixing of the flags.

I was worried about keeping Ryland entertained (and off the field); but LOTS of snacks and shape builder on the iphone have done the trick!
