Mindy, it seems to me that you are barking up the tree, ie...out on a limb, rather leafing good sense behind in calling that bush a family tree. You should get to the root of the problem, as I wood, to branch out and get to the end grain. Thanks for sharing the pics of the boys...a few of you and the metal master would be nice also.
